Today I read a post written by a former manager at Amazon. He talked about the salary, job and work for different levels of software engineers. Here it is:
Amazon employees' salaries differ greatly, even at the same level. It is a function of when you get hired (i.e. good job market or not), your previous salary, how much you negotiated, and your career progression after joining Amazon.
I once managed a team and hired a SDE fresh out of University of Washington. He was making more than a SDE II who had been working at Amazon for 5+ years.
The SDE 2 made less because he made several lateral moves inside the company. He was also too passive, and was pushed around by his coworkers and managers.
Amazon has a very intense work environment. Some people will say it's a "sweat shop". However, if you're willing to get hands dirty, don't mind to work hard and get into nifty gifty details, you will learn a lot. It's a great company for folks with the right mind set and expectation. But it's not for everyone. Bay area companies tend to treat employees much better than Amazon. If you're single, you could work for Amazon, but if you have a family, it might be too intense for you.

In terms of benefits, Amazon is not as good as microsoft. What I heard:
--First year only 10 vacation days. 2-5 years, 15 days
--50% match for up to 4% of base
--Need to pay co-pay for health insurance
--Heavily dependent on employee performance for stock grants

Every since the recent Microsoft pay-raise, some as high as close to 20%, the salary at Amazon is not as attractive as Microsoft. I guess java/open source programmers might want to still work for Amazon.

Although most Amazon positions require on-call, but I heard Amazon SDET positions have no oncall duty, not sure if that's true.
