get a pair (grow a pair): 刺激对方、让对方鼓起勇气的说法。类似的英文说法是 act like a man, be bold! 中文对应的说法就是，勇往直前，做个男子汉! pair就是testicles(一对睾丸)的意思。俚语还叫做balls。所以，get a pair就是说要be a man, be courageous。类似的，形容一个人充满勇气，可以说: you've got balls。

pay lip service to: 就是嘴头上说支持某事，但没有任何实际行动，只是打嘴炮。这个说法来自圣经, Isaiah 29:13, "this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me."

floored: 彻底的被震撼了的意思，就好像两只脚被粘到地板上了。例句: I'm completely floored right now, I have no idea what I'm going to do.

water under the bridge: 过去的就过去了，不再重要了的意思。Something is in the past and no longer important. 这个俚语在英国和美国都有人用。来源大概在1800年代的时候。当某人说，一件事情已经是water under the bridge了，就是说，过去了的不可能挽回了，所以不要在为此焦虑了。例句: We just call it water under the bridge and move on then.

give me a holler: 大声招呼的意思。holler是从这些词变种来的: hollo, hail等。例句比如说，if you’d ever like to collaborate, give me a holler. 就是说，如果需要合作的话，跟我打声招呼哈。

building rapport: 建立友好关系的意思。rapport是互相信任，感情上的亲和力的意思。rapport这个词是从古代法文的raporter来的，原意是指的带回来(to bring back)。也就是说，把对方的友好信任带回来了。这个词组在美国做销售的人来说都知道。因为和中国一样，销售的第一步其实就是和顾客搞好人际关系。

let's get down to brass tacks: 让我们开始谈正经的吧。同义词还有get down to nuts and bolts, get down to the nitty-gritty, get down to business. 这个美国俚语来自于过去美国的五金店或者裁缝店，在柜台两端钉着brass tacks(黄铜钉子), 以便丈量布料等物品的长度。这样就省得把布的一头拉近鼻子，另一头伸直胳膊扯到手指尖作为一个yard来丈量了。
